Increasing Teacher-Student Engagement Through Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
The equity gap in the US higher education context is vast, with Black and Latinx student populations among the lowest in terms of university admission, enrollment and completion rates. Through inquiry into and practice of culturally responsive pedagogy, this presentation aims to share approaches that tap into how all students--but in particular, underrepresented populations--learn best in order to achieve deeper engagement and learning, leading to higher rates of course and degree completion while fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging. Building on Tara Yosso’s critical race theory-driven interpretation of traditional views of cultural wealth, the counter narrative model of “Community Cultural Wealth” forms the basis for my curriculum and classroom practices.
