Ethics assessment of studies involving humans or personal data by a faculty ethics committee has recently become more customary (or even mandatory) in various faculties at Utrecht University. For educational research in higher education, including SOTL projects, such assessment is applicable as well. Yet, many researchers have little experience with such procedures and are not always sure what is being asked of them. Roald Verhoeff and Mariëtte van den Hoven will give a short introduction on ethics assessment and will, interactively, work with questions regarding informed consent (GDPR approved), data management issues and other ethical considerations. They will also pay attention to the issue of perceived bureaucracy (a lot of work for a small intervention) and the need to ensure ethically responsible choices by means of an ethics approval.
